Cabinets are used in bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens and other locations for various purposes. Cabinet hinge is an important part of the cabinet. There are many kinds of cabinet hinges available in the market in various designs. The features differ from one type of cabinet hinge to another. Thus, it is necessary to find the right cabinet hinge for a particular kind of cabinet. The cabinet hinges are classified according to designs and features. Some have been discussed here.

Types of Designs

Face frame- Face frame cabinet hinges are used in face frame cabinets. In face frame cabinets, some part of the frame is present around the opening of the cabinet. One side of a face frame hinge is attached to a side of the cabinet door while the other side is attached to the face frame of the cabinet. These are concealed cabinet hinges because they are not visible from the outside. Face frame cabinet hinges are not suitable for frameless cabinets.

Barrel- Barrel cabinet door hinges are not visible on the cabinet doors. One side of a barrel hinge is attached to the cabinet door while the other side is attached to the cabinet frame. The diameter of the barrel hinge should be lesser than the thickness of the cabinet door and frame.

Overlay- Overlay cabinet hinges are used in partial, full or half overlay cabinets. Overlay refers to the position of the cabinet door with respect to the cabinet frame. The cabinet door can either be present in front of the frame or inside the frame. In partial overlay cabinets, a space is present between the cabinet door and the frame. Full overlay cabinet hinges for full overlay cabinets are attached to the door and face frame inside the cabinet. Half overlay hinges are suitable for both half and partial overlay cabinets. In half overlay cabinets, the hinges are fixed on the partition between the two cabinet doors.

Inset- The inset cabinet hinges are characterised by a narrow side and a wide side. The narrow side of the hinge is attached to the door frame of the cabinet while the wide side is attached to the inside portion of the cabinet door. Inset cabinet hinges can either be concealed or visible from outside.

Butt- Butt hinges are very commonly used cabinet and door hinges. They have two rectangular shaped parts. One part of the butt hinge is attached to the cabinet frame while the other part is attached to the cabinet door. The hinge moves with the help of a ball joint or pin. This type of hinge can be seen from the outside.

Types of Features

Demountable- Demountable cabinet hinges are detachable from the cabinet doors which enable you to remove the doors. This makes it convenient for you to clean or repair the cabinet doors whenever required. Both single and double demountable cabinet hinges are available in the market. Single demountable hinge has one end installed on the cabinet frame and the other end fixed into a slot on the door without the help of screws. Double demountable hinge has both the sides fixed inside slots on the door and frame without screws.

Self Closing- Self closing cabinet hinges can either be spring loaded or hydraulic cabinet hinges. In spring loaded versions, the spring uncoils when you open the cabinet door and recoils when you withdraw the pressure. In case of hydraulic versions, a vacuum is created in the hinge when the pressure is withdrawn which allows it to close on its own.

Soft Closing- Soft closing cabinet hinges enable the cabinet doors to close without generating a sound. Hydraulic system is used by soft close cabinet hinges to generate vacuum leading to soundless door closure.

Corner- Wide angle opening of the cabinet door is permitted by corner cabinet hinges. They are commonly used in corner kitchen cabinets.

How to Purchase?

The best cabinet hinges are the ones which are compatible with the type of cabinets that the customers possess. When you buy Cabinet Hinge, it is essential for you to consider whether the cabinet is frame or frameless and the type of cabinet door. In case of unconcealed hinges, the finish should complement the look of the cabinet. Cabinet hinges come in various finishes such as nickel, steel, copper, brass, chrome, etc.
