Plywood is an ancient engineered wood product available in the market. The number of ways in which plywood can be used in the construction industry is endless. Plywood is manufactured by gluing a thin sheet of wood together. These sheets are stacked on top of one other. These sheets are alternately placed in between wood grains.

Plywood is available in different grades that vary in terms of application and property. The most common grades of plywood are MR, BWP and BWR grades. Let's understand BWR plywood meaning and its application before comparing it to other grades.

What is BWR plywood?

BWR is a type of plywood standard that is widely in usage. BWR stands for “boiling water resistance”, which is manufactured by a number of companies to meet the needs of the construction industry. This grade of plywood can be identified easily by IS marking on it.  The best quality available is 303 BWR plywood grade.

Uses of BWR plywood Grade

The important factor in deciding which material to use for making a home or office furniture is budget. BWR plywood price is cheaper in comparison to other grades of plywood like marine grade plywood and BWP Plywood. BWR grade plywood price is calculated at per square ft basis. The dimensions of plywood such as size and thickness affect the cost of the grade.

BWR grade plywood is known for its waterproof capacity. This property of the plywood makes it suitable to be used in the Kitchen. The cabinets and furniture installed in the kitchen as it is likely to get exposed to moisture and get wet in the process. Hence it is important to make them with material that has resistance to moisture.

Phenol resin is used in the manufacturing of BWR plywood making it waterproof. Hence BWR plywood is preferred in making furniture exposed to moisture and also for outdoor woodwork. Additionally, BWR plywood can also be used in making interior woodworks. Floors, walls, packing, fencing, interiors of a vehicle are different places where you can see the usage of plywood.

How is BWR plywood different from Marine Grade plywood?

Marine grade plywood is different from BWR grade plywood. It is true that BWR can be used for exterior woodwork and in making furniture that may be exposed to moisture. But moisture resistance capacity of marine grade plywood is higher than BWR grade. A marine grade can resist water for a longer duration than BWR plywood. Marine is exterior gr

ade plywood that can withhold extreme weather conditions making it different from BWR plywood.

Further, the BWR plywood cost is less in comparison to marine grade. marine grade plywood is used in the construction of boats and ships. The quality of marine grade plywood is not necessary for making household furniture. Good BWR water resistance plywood will be sufficient in making household furniture.

BWR V/S BWP

BWR stands for “boiling water resistant” and on the other hand BWP stands for “boiling waterproof”. Both BWR and BWP plywood grade has exterior application in the construction industry. In fact, the standard test that BWP and BWR grade plywood needs to pass to get IS marking is quite similar.

Manufacturers of plywood generally mark BWP to indicate block boards. This means this grade of plywood is best used as outdoor waterproof block boards. Similarly, when it is marked as BWR it means it is waterproof plywood used for exterior construction.

Both the grades of plywood are used for making kitchen cabinets and furniture. Using waterproof material for making furniture that is being exposed to moisture ensures durability.

Is BWR plywood better than MR grade.

MR Grade plywood is moisture resistant, it is not waterproof. Whereas BWR plywood is waterproof making it suitable to use in the interior as well as exterior woodworks. MR grade is interior grade plywood; it cannot be used in any place that gets wet like bathrooms.

BWR plywood has better strength than MR grade plywood. BWR plywood is slightly costlier than MR grade plywood. Urea is used in gluing the sheet while manufacturing MR grade plywood. But synthetic resin (phenol formaldehyde) is used as an adhesive for manufacturing BWR grade plywood. MR grade is used in making living room furniture whereas BWR grade plywood is used in making kitchen cabinets.
