Mechanism
The german tilt and turn windows have handles to operate them. When the handle is in downward position, the window is locked. Rotating the handle by 90 degrees to sideways results in the window opening horizontally. When the handle is rotated by 90 degrees again so that it points in the upward direction, the window tilts inside the house. It opens from the top and not from the side. The window locks after tilting for some inches. The window can be opened horizontally to enable easy cleaning of the glass or serve as an exit window. On the other hand, tilted configuration allows draft-free ventilation of the room, prevents rain water from entering the room and acts as an impediment against intrusions.
In case of european tilt and turn windows, a single handle is used to swing the window like a door and tilt it for ventilation. The handle needs to be turned by 90 degrees to open the sash like a door while turning the handle by 180 degrees causes the lower sash to get locked in the frame and tilt the top sash into the room. The design allows the window to be used as a door as well usually to gain access to a balcony.
