Topical Sealers form a surface or coating on top of the stone or concrete to form a barrier against moisture and chlorides. They also offer mild protection against oils, and absorption of grease and other liquid solutions when used on the floor or counters.
The main characteristics of topical sealers are –
- They form a very glossy coating on top of the stone, concrete or flooring. This can give a very plastic and artificial look to natural stone.
- The sealer shall need regular maintenance in case they strip.
- It is UV resistant.
- These sealers are non-breathable hence they tend to trap moisture within and can damage porous stones like slate and limestone.
The two main types of Topical sealers are-
Acrylic Resin Sealers – These sealers have solvent-based and water-based formulas which are easy to apply and cost-effective.
Epoxy/Urethane Sealers– These sealers are costly and have a larger lifespan and are superior quality topical sealers.
