India’s Step Towards Greener Buildings

With rise in awareness about how the buildings contribute significantly to the environment, green buildings in India are expected to grow from 1.7 billion sq feet, currently, to 3 billion sq feet by 2020. Mahesh Ramanujam, President and CEO of the US Green Building Council (USGBC), said in a statement that, around 500 projects of theirs in India were green buildings and they expected the number to double in the coming years. He has also said that India ranked third among the top 10 countries for LEED green building with nearly 650 Indian building projects earning LEED certification in 2016. Additionally, the green buildings’ materials market is estimated to reach $234 billion by 2019.

A JLL report states, Given that low-cost housing is bound to see a huge growth in the next two decades and more than 60 per cent of India’s infrastructure yet to be built, residential and commercial property developers are now increasingly being prevailed upon to evolve and incorporate green features.
