Indian-based architectural studio Modo Design was commissioned to design a retreat for family. Located in Ahmedabad, the site, with its existing foliage of neem, chikoo and amla trees, gave the designers the perfect opportunity to utilise the trees and come up with ‘House by the Trees.’ The getwaway has been styled as a resort-like space to give its users the feel of a holiday home away from their mundane life. The front block obtains the living, dining and verandah spaces, interrupted by a glass pavilion while the rear block accommodates the private bedroom areas and the kitchen. A linear courtyard divides the front and back spaces, while enhancing the sense of openness from enclosed areas. All the ceilings inside are exposed concrete finishes while the windows are made of valsadi wood. The facade of the house uses natural materials and finishes to make it appear seamless with the trees that surround it.
