What is Block Board?

Block board is a type of construction material used in furniture making as well. Block boards are by softwood strips placed edge to edge. These softwood strips are placed in between hardwood and then glued together under high pressure.

These block boards are used in various part of the construction. Block boards are used in the interior parts of a construction. They are used to make cabinets, flush door, interior wooden décor, etc. Block boards furniture is also used by people on a daily basis.

Types of Block Boards

Block boards are broadly classified into two categories based on their usage namely:

1. MR Grade:

MR stands for moisture resistance that is widely used in the manufacturing of interior furniture.  Here Moisture resistance of a block board means board block is capable of resisting humidity that may be present. MR grade block board is generally used in making furniture that is used at home and office. In India, MR grade block board is also called as commercial grade. This type of block board is used in making furniture that does not get wet, example furniture used in the living room, office, and bedrooms.

2. BWR or BWP grade

BWR means boiling water resistance that is used in making Kitchen furniture, bus body, and railway coaches. Comparatively, BWR grade block boards are high in water resistance than MR grade block boards.

Further, a BWR grade block board is better in terms of quality and strength. Though BWR block boards are costly than MR grade, the waterproof property of this variety is worth the pay. In manufacturing BWR board Synthetic plastic resin is used which makes it suitable for outdoor use.

Size and Price of block board in India

Block boards are available in the market in different size and thickness. MR grade block boards in 8X4, 7X4, and 6X4 feet sizes are available. The price of the block board in India of MR grade depends on finish and quality.

BWR grade block boards come in 16mm; 18mm and etc. 19 mm block board are thickness is commonly in usage. The price of the blocking board under BWR category varies based on the inner wood used, size and thickness of a sheet. The cost of block boards is calculated per square ft.

Properties of block board

Block and boards are relatively new construction material that is being used in India. As a homeowner, it is an absolute necessity to know the properties of material before making a purchase.

1. Block boards sheets are light in weight which makes it easy to transport and handle them.
2. Block boards have a moderate amount of resistance to humidity. BWR block boards can be waterproof by using resin while bonding them together.
3. The capacity of a block board to hold screws and nails in place is good. They are suitable for making office and home furniture.
4. One important feature of block board is they can be easily worked on by carpenters using regular tools. Block boards need know require special tools to cut or drill nails into it. This property of block board is what makes them suitable in making flush doors. Custom furniture can be easily designed using block boards as their fitting ability is spot on.
5. The dimensional capacity of a block board makes it resistant to cracking and warping even when exposed to humidity.
6. BWR grade of block boards is the preferred category, as superior glue is used in manufacturing them. The quality of BWR is better making it stronger and water resistance.
7. One additional feature of block boards is that they can be used as soundproofing partition. Block board are poor conductors of sound and heat.
8. Block boards can be finished using paints and lamination. Laminated block boards have the same look and appearance of a costlier board like plywood.

Plywood V/S Block Boards

Plywood is a wooden panel made by stacking whereas block boards consist of softwood strips joined together edge to edge by high-end glue under high temperature. Block board has a stable dimensional capacity making it resistant to cracking and warping in comparison to plywood. Further block boards don’t spit on cutting nor do they need sanding.
