The New Integrated Passenger Terminal at Chandigarh airport, inaugurated on September 11 by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has achieved a 4-star GRIHA Rating. This is the first airport building to achieve a GRIHA rating. A 4-star rating was given to the building as per the GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) parameters of green buildings as the building demonstrated a reduction of 50% electrical energy use, 39% irrigation water requirement and 67.36% building water use from the GRIHA benchmark.
The terminal building is designed for optimal solar orientation with appropriate shading to minimize heat gain and maximize energy efficiency. The glass area is limited to 58% of the façade area and the roof is well insulated. The building has been constructed using sustainable materials such as fly ash bricks and recycled products.
