Gujarat is a notable market for wood import and export with ports of Mundra and Kandla which have emerged as forerunners accelerating economic growth in the region. In order to engage with the wood importers community in Kutch, FII India organised an informative session on creative applications and design possibilities with Canadian Wood. The hour long interactive seminar focused on wood import & export trends, growth of sawn lumber and adoption of Canadian Wood by large scale Indian manufacturers, giving the audience a sense of countless possibilities Canadian wood offers.

The seminar ended with a Q & A round wherein importers interacted freely with the FII India team present at the seminar.

Peter Bradfield said, “It is heartening to note that in spite of the country’s fascination with tropical hardwoods, the import of softwoods has been growing steadily from 29% to 38% over the last 3 years, we have seen a positive trend in import of lumber growing from 2% to 10% over the last 3 years.

The discussion also threw light on India’s strong wood culture, which unlike western countries doesn’t much consume wood for structural use, the demand is mainly from the door/door jams, furniture, millwork, interiors resulting from rising disposable incomes  in the society. A growing interest has been noticed in outdoor applications such as pergolas and gazebos etc. apart from large quantities of solid wood being used in shuttering and packaging industry.

Pranesh Chhibber, Country Director, FII India stated, “The industry is pretty optimistic in general about the government’s mega programs: 1) Smart Cities Mission 2) Atal Mission for rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and 3) Make in India and rekindling the demand in real estate sector which indirectly bodes well for woodworking industry as well.

Above measures and the government’s initiatives in responding to environmental challenges and growing the economy by encouraging use of clean and efficient materials makes us very bullish on the Indian economy looking for sustainably managed sources to meet its demands. B.C. Canada is well positioned as one such source to Indian wood industry.”
