This year’s Serpentine Pavilion has been designed by Burkinabe architect Diébédo Francis Kéré. The pavilion is in its 17th year this time, with the past architect designers being BjarkeIngels, Peter Zumthor, Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron and Sou Fujimoto. Each year, during the summer, a pavilion is designed and erected at London’s Kensington Gardens, open for public interaction and use. The walls of the pavilion create a triangular baton and are made using the material of wood, colored blue and cut in the shape of batons. A pattern in the walls creates a perforation, allowing natural light to come through. A ring shaped slatted-timber roof hangs overhead to direct rain down into a central courtyard, transforming it into a waterfall. Kéré’s Serpentine Pavilion opens to the public from 23 June until 8 October 2017.
