Sealant is a material which has the necessary adhesive and cohesive properties to form a seal. It is a viscous material that changes its state to become solid, once applied it acts as a barrier and is used to prevent the passage of air ,dust , heat, noise, fire, smoke or any kind of liquid.

In Building Construction it is used to close small openings that are difficult to close with other materials like concrete, drywall etc. The sealants act as an impervious material used to fill joints and cracks in concrete and mortar. It is also used to exclude water and solid matter from any joints.
However deterioration of the sealant could occur due to prolonged exposure to water and ultra violet light.
The use of sealants varies widely and is used in many industries like construction, automotive and aerospace industries.
