Lift & Slide Doors

Lift and slide doors are designed to provide extra large openings to rooms. These are transparent glazed doors which enable natural light to filter into the room and provide unobstructed outdoor view. The mechanism of lift slide door ensures that the door panels do not open into the room but slide parallel to the fixed unit. What’s the mechanism?

The mechanism of lift and slide doors is very simple. The door panels are kept locked in place against the sill. A handle disengages the lock to lift the door panels. Thereafter, the door slides on the rail through its wheels. The door lifts and slides effortlessly irrespective of its weight. The lift and slide door can either open from the middle or the whole unit can slide to one side.

The lift and slide door hardware includes weather seal gasket to prevent air and water leakage when the door is locked into place, door handle to unlock the door panels and a series of levers and wheels to slide the door on the sill. The tracks on which the door slides are usually embedded to remain secure against forced entry and storms. Many types of lift and slide doors feature multi-point locking hardware for extra security. Concealed hinges also feature in many high quality lift and slide doors. 

Materials used

Aluminium is a common material for making the frames of lift and slide doors. The main advantage of lift and slide aluminium doors is that the high load bearing capacity of aluminium enables them to use more glass as compared to other kinds of lift and slide doors. More glass means more natural light filtering through the door. Lift and slide doors with aluminium frames also do not require external maintenance.

Wood such as pine or oak and uPVC can also be used to make the frames of lift and slide doors.

Lift and slide doors can be used in many location in the house. Apart from being used as lift and slide patio doors, they can also be used in balcony entrances and side entrances.
